- The long term corrosion of concrete sewer infrastructure costs the Australian water industry 100's of millions of dollars per year. However until recently little information was known about how the corrosion process progresses over time and how different environmental factors impact on the rate of deterioration. This information is vital in predicting the time to failure of existing reinforced concrete sewer systems, and also assessing strategies for effectively monitoring sewer corrosion potential and to minimise corrosion rates in the sewer. A recently completed 7 year field trial examined the corrosion behaviour of new and aged sewer pipe in Australian gravity sewers. The work enabled a detailed picture of the corrosion life of a pipe to be developed and led to a validated predictive model which is applicable over a wide range of sewer conditions. The findings of the study and the subsequent model are discussed in this paper.
